Applied Data Systems' Strong-ARM Based Systems now hosts Century Software's Embedded Development Environment and Applications Toolkit ADS & Century combine graphical, multimedia development on embedded Linux

San Francisco, CA - April 9, 2001 - Applied Data Systems (ADS) today introduced an embedded platform featuring Century Software Embedded Technologies' enhanced version of its Nano-X-based applications toolkit and PDA operating environment on ADS' new handheld computer, the Bitsy, at ESC. The richly-featured toolkit features new capabilities in multiple areas: the graphical operating environment, applications and multimedia. The toolkit fits perfectly with the Bitsy's low-power consumption /small form factor for challenging handheld, battery driven applications.ADS, a leading developer of application-ready embedded Linux systems, worked with Century to design this toolkit as the basis for the development and execution of other Linux-based applications for ADS' Bitsy, a StrongARM-based system designed on a 3 x 5" footprint for handheld and PDA applications, with wireless capability.

"We are seeing very strong market interest in complete embedded Linux solutions for internet appliances, handheld and wireless applications. Century Software has developed a high quality toolkit and SDK which is a powerful enhancement for our customer needs," said Robert Olsen, President and CEO of Applied Data Systems.

The PDA applications toolkit and operating environment is based on the popular Nano-X graphical windowing system for embedded Linux (www.Nano-X.org). Century's specialized "Screen Top" window manager, handles the look and feel of the operating environment for the PDA. The Screentop is customizable with a configuration file that allows various directories to be searched and displayed as icons. Graphical enhancements for the Screentop include a web browser, terminal emulator, popup keyboard and handwriting recognition, system configurability to change the background screen, network configurability, a terminal emulator and email capabilities. The ViewML Browser is a small memory footprint, high-quality web browser targeting the needs of the rapidly growing embedded Linux market.

ViewML provides HTML v3.2 display in only 800k ROM and 2Mb RAM, and is the first open source, royalty free web browser specifically targeted towards the embedded Linux market. The system has a rich multimedia package which includes MP3 audio, Mpeg 1 and 2 with streaming video capabilities, image viewers and games. Century Software's new core multimedia audio and video technologies include a multi-threaded MP3 player, optionally with a user interface using the Nano-X embedded graphical windowing system and the Fast Light Tool Kit applications framework. Playlists and shuffling, as well as streaming audio from the flash file system or Internet are supported, as well as multiple bitrates and volume adjustments. An MPEG-1 video player, with support for connectivity via TCP/IP for video source as well as from the local file system, is also available. Video image resizing to any width and height is supported. The Graphics Client supports video display in 8 and 16 bits per pixel.

The SDK

Century and ADS have introduced a Standard Development Kit (SDK) with source code, time binaries and complete tool chains, and a widgit set, which facilitates users to develop applications on screen and to cross compile to the screen level. The SDK has email and telephone support .

Together, the ADS Bitsy and Century Software's suite of embedded Linux tool chain enhancements and multimedia technologies allow an OEM or systems integrator quickly produce an application requiring web connectivity or audio/video on Linux. Contact Jack Ottensoser at ADS (301-490-4007x117) or Jon Beutler at Century (801-268-3088x145) for pricing and availability.
