Century Software and MontaVista Introduce First Open Source Embedded Browser for Internet Appliances

Small footprint Linux based Browser delivered at no charge as open source

SUNNYVALE, Calif. and SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. - July 14, 2000 - MontaVista Software, Inc., developer of the Hard HatTM Linux¨ operating system for embedded applications and Century Software, Inc., a leader in UNIX connectivity solutions, today announced the availability of the first freely-available, open source web browser targeted specifically at the embedded Linux platform. The browser, ViewML, accelerates development and deployment of browser-enabled devices, such as hand-held computers, navigation systems, smart phones, and set-top boxes.

The ViewML Project is developed and maintained from publicly-available source code, with contributions from the embedded Linux community. The ViewML Browser Project's first release implements HTML 3.2 display capabilities, along with a user interface and a basic JavaScript interpreter, all in about 2 MB of RAM. ViewML runs on both the standard X Window System as well as the Nano-X embedded windowing system.

"MontaVista and Century Software have joined forces to meet the demands of the rapidly growing Internet Appliance market. ViewML offers OEMs a high-quality, small footprint web browser with full source code available for modifications and enhancements," said Jim Ready, CEO of MontaVista.

"This joint effort, unlike many open source projects, enjoys technical and financial backing from multiple sponsors," added Greg Haerr, Century Software CEO. "This kind of support fosters the engineering needed to produce a superior web browser targeted at embedded Linux systems. Moreover, while other embedded browsers do exist, ViewML is the only small footprint browser that is open source and completely royalty free".

Availability and Compatibility

ViewML Project source code, screen shots and frequently asked questions are available on-line at http://www.viewml.com. Hard Hat Linux is available at http://www.mvista.com. The ViewML Project expects to release regular enhancements to the browser, encouraging and integrating contributions from the open source community.

Hard Hat Linux and ViewML are available for many popular microprocessors used in embedded systems, including PowerPC, x86/Pentium, StrongARM and NEC MIPS. MontaVista's embedded CDK (Cross Development Kit) is available from http://www.mvista.com and supports cross compilation of ViewML source code into a range of embedded target systems.
